Restoration Works at Marston Gate, Winchester

Evolution5 is pleased to have been appointed by Scott White and Hookins as the main contractor for their client for restoration and remediation works at Marston Gate, Winchester.

Situated on the outskirts of Winchester City Centre, the wall sits on the original city walls and Roman foundations, a scheduled monument. Over time, the wall has bowed and now needs significant specialist work.

In order to obtain consent from Historic England to start work, we had to comply with stringent pre-commencement conditions. This includes analysing materials within the existing structure to define the flint and lime mortar used in the repairs.

Evolution5 has appointed Traditional Stone for the takedown and rebuild the wall to remediate this piece of Winchester’s history. Pointing and remediation will be carried out in line with specialist surveys. Our work is being overseen by Pre-Construct Archaeology, Winchester who are compiling full photogrammetry records for before and after the project, monitoring our compliance and the quality of the work.

To safely deliver the project, we have liaised and complied with Hampshire Highways conditions, engaging Chevron Traffic Management for safe traffic management around the site.

Initially, it was anticipated that one lane of the road running alongside the wall would be closed for the full duration of the building works. However, with careful planning we have reduced this to one week at the start, and one week at the end, in turn reducing disruption on one of the busiest roads in the city.

The project has a 19 week construction programme, however the nature of the materials being used could affect this. For example, Lime mortar cannot be laid if the temperature falls below 4 degrees. Where necessary, we can protect elements of the structure by wrapping them, for example with hessian.

A big thank you to contractors from Arb Elite and Pro-Fix Scaffolding for their work in setting the site up for work to start.
