Change is the law of life. And those who look only into the past and present are certain to miss the future

JFKIt is fifty years since the assassination of the Civil Rights Activist and 35th US President, John F Kennedy. JFK certainly has his place in history as one of the great leaders, known for his smart thinking and ability to inspire others.

I thought I’d spend my coffee break giving a couple of minutes thought to what he actually meant by change is the law of life.

In some way or another, the majority of us shy away from change because it is uncomfortable, overwhelming and scary. From the moment we are born to the day we pass we go through continuous physical change but yet we struggle with the psychological aspects of change and find it difficult to accept.

To help us change ourselves, make changes or inspire action it is necessary to start with why? If we can find no compelling reason to change then why would we? If we see no problem with the way things are then why would we change? To create a persuasive reason to change we need to envisage what things will be like in the future if we don’t, and how much better things could be if we do. And it is this vision and future imaging that makes great leaders like JFK stand out and inspire us to follow to make the necessary changes happen. So, if we only look into the past and present we are certain to miss the future.
